When someone tells you to “just be yourself,” what does that really mean? Think about it…
Are you being yourself when you’re drinking a delicious glass of wine, hanging out with a couple of friends on a quiet Friday evening?
Are you being yourself when meeting a potential new client?
How about when you’re at a sports event rooting for your favorite team? (Go Yankees! That didn’t sound very passionate – I’m not a sports fan. But you might be.)
Truth is… we all have many different selves. I hate it when people say, “Just be yourself” because I know how meaningless and unhelpful that advice is. In different situations and in a variety of circumstances, we adapt. And here’s the interesting thing… we just naturally do this without giving it any thought and without any training whatsoever.
Except when it’s time to deliver a speech or presentation. Then we just don’t know what to do and I can tell you that advice, “Just be yourself,” is at its most unhelpful. Because if you want to become a highly paid, sought-after speaker who effortlessly commands the stage and has audiences eating out your hand, then you must learn not to be yourself, but to be your BEST self in that unique and specialized situation and circumstance.
One thing I do know for sure is this… The ability to captivate and magnetize your audience – that “it” factor (what I like to call CHARISMA)… It’s not inborn. It’s learned.
And there are specific skills and techniques you must master if you want to become not just good, but AMAZING on stage.
